Gemguide App

Designing an app for the world’s most precious gems

Gemguide is an industry leader in gem pricing and market information. They approached Lion Interactive to help them design an app that lets users view pricing on individual stones in wholesale and retail.

The goal of this app was to get jewelry appraisal services quickly, and conveniently and for it to be profitable. My role on the team was primarily to work on the visual design of the product.

Viewing Diamond and Gemstone Pricing in the App

This app is one that is vital for jewelers worldwide and will be used regularly by companies like Neiman Marcus to your local gem collectors

UI Iterations

My task was to specifically work from some very rough sketches and the flow states of the app itself that was provided by the team. Because this was a month-long project, with a mere week spent on visual identity, I quickly wireframed out the designs and started the explorations for the interface. I worked with various shades of purple stemming from the primary purple hue. It was important to follow the tone of the brand and make the product accessible, brand-focused, and modern. We wanted to make it feel elegant yet luxurious. As a result, I canvased over 10 different iterations.

Flow States

After choosing a design direction, I worked on the final flow states of the design ensuring that the style matched the elements within Gemguide’s brand guidelines. I also worked on sourcing the icons, recoloring them, and testing out all the screen comps on a phone. After this, I passed on the comps to the developers to execute to its finality.

Outcome & Key Takeaways

The delivered product was polished, accessible brand-focused, and contemporary in design. The clients were happy about the results, especially about having multiple options for the look and feel.

• Gemguide was a project that allowed me to challenge myself completely when designing for a mobile platform. The biggest challenge was to compose a design that was legible on the smaller screen. I had taken some time to learn the rules and real estate of designing for an iOS device and it was great to see the knowledge actualized.

• I was able to test my design on the physical device, which helped me make changes quickly. Working with a developer helped me validate my design decisions and figure out what aspects of the work were feasible.
